I'm an office administrator for a 180-person contract manufacturing company. For the past four years, I've handled all the purchasing—roughly $1.1 million annually spread across 16 vendors. One listing I almost bought from had "Teflon snow and ice repellant spray" in the title. I checked the spec sheet before purchasing—the actual product had somewhere between 0 and functionally zero PTFE. The word Teflon was in the listing title, not the formula.

I'm not a materials scientist, so I can't speak to what their spray actually was. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective: verify before you place the order. A genuine DuPont product ships with documentation—application rates, temperature rating, surface compatibility. If the listing has no documentation, I don't buy it.

People think expensive products are overpriced. Actually, products that work can charge more. The causation runs the other way. The real cost isn't the $18 can of repellant. The real cost is two hours of labor re-sanding a dock ramp that wasn't actually protected.

Scenario 2: You know the material, but not the product name

This one happens all the time. A maintenance tech emails me: "Need a plastic sheet, resistant to [chemical I can't pronounce], about [dimensions]." They might not name the material. Or they name a general category and expect me to figure it out.

So I became an unofficial translator.

One of the most common questions I get, from my own team and from vendors: what type of plastic is PP?

PP is polypropylene. It's a thermoplastic polymer. In practical terms, it's the workhorse of the plastics family: decent chemical resistance, decent heat resistance up to about 200°F, doesn't shatter under impact the way some other plastics do, and it's reasonably priced.

But I've learned to pause when someone says "it's just plastic." PP is not the same as PET. It's not the same as PTFE. It's not the same as polycarbonate. Here's the embarrassing part: I once substituted a polyethylene sheet when the request called for PP because I thought they were "basically the same." They are not. The sheet failed in a chemical bath within a week.

The assumption is that "plastic" is one category and the specific type is a brand preference. The reality is that the specific type is the entire story. The polymer structure determines what the material can touch, what heat it can withstand, and how it fails under stress.

Same logic applies when I'm buying DuPont plastics. DuPont makes PTFE under the Teflon brand, thermoplastic elastomers, engineering resins, the list goes on. But honestly, I don't buy by brand for raw materials. I buy by spec. The brand just makes the spec easier to find and trust. If I tell a supplier "I need virgin PP sheets, 12mm thick," the material data sheet matters more than the logo stamped on it.

And look, I wish I had tracked the cost difference more carefully over the years. What I can say anecdotally is: the cheapest option rarely fails cheaply. Labor to replace a failed part makes the $30 sheet cost $300 in real terms.

Scenario 3: You're buying for a specific application, somewhere specific

This is where my job gets weird, because sometimes I buy things I have zero technical knowledge of.

Earlier this year, I needed to source hydraulic hoses for a client's facility in Everett, Washington. I typed in "hydraulic hose Everett" and got a list of local suppliers. But I can't speak to burst pressure ratings or fitting compatibility. I'm not a hydraulic systems engineer. What I can tell you from a purchasing perspective is how to evaluate who you're buying from.

The supplier I ultimately chose asked a question the others didn't: "What's the application?" Then they said, "That hose will work, but I'd recommend this one instead. Here's why." They talked me out of the more expensive option and into the correct one.

That pushback earned my trust. The vendor who says "this isn't our strength—here's who does it better" earns trust for everything else. A generalist who overpromises gets the order once. A specialist who knows their limits gets the order for years.

Another example, one that seems silly but isn't: someone asked me to order wheels for a material handling cart. They described it as a rubber wheel skateboard setup. I had to ask. Turns out they were right in a way—polyurethane skateboard wheels use the same basic construction as many industrial cart wheels.

Here's the insight from that search: the category is just the entry point. "Rubber" is not a spec. "Skateboard" is not a spec. What matters is durometer rating, wheel diameter, bearing size, load capacity. Those numbers determine whether a wheel survives a month on a factory floor.

How to tell which scenario you're in

If you're about to buy something right now, here's a simple way to figure out which of the three applies to you:

  • If you're searching for a branded product by name—like "DuPont Teflon Snow and Ice Repellant"—you're in Scenario 1. Confirm the exact product and source. Don't trust the listing title. Ask for the spec sheet.
  • If you're searching for a material—like "what type of plastic is PP"—you're in Scenario 2. Pause and think about the application. What chemical is it touching? What temperature? What load? Those answers matter more than the material name.
  • If you're searching for a product plus a location or plus a use case—like "hydraulic hose Everett" or "rubber wheel skateboard"—you're in Scenario 3. Don't buy from a listing. Talk to a human who can push back and ask questions.

One more thing. I read product claims with skepticism, and I've learned to back that up with a simple standard: if a claim can't be substantiated, skip it. The FTC's advertising guidelines (ftc.gov) require that claims be truthful and backed by evidence. I apply that same logic to every product I order. "Industrial grade," "heavy duty," "almost like Teflon"—these phrases need proof.

I've bought things that didn't work out. It's part of the job. But the failures that actually hurt were the ones where I skipped verification because I assumed the brand name was enough.

The brand gets you trust. The spec sheet keeps it.
