One of the most common procurement searches is “is nylon a thermoplastic or thermoset?” The answer: nylon is a thermoplastic. It softens and melts when heated, and it can be remolded, welded, or extruded again. Thermosets—like cross-linked epoxy or polyurethane—cannot be remelted once cured. That single difference affects repairability, chemical resistance, heat resistance, and total cost.

If you're comparing a nylon part against a thermoset alternative, you're not looking at “cheap or expensive.” You're looking at two different lifecycles. Thermoplastic is usually easier to machine and repair; thermoset can be more rigid and heat-resistant. There is no universal winner.

This is also where I'll address the “pet possum” search. PET—polyethylene terephthalate—is another thermoplastic polyester, used in bottles, films, and some foam board cores. It is not, I repeat, a pet possum. But if that search term brought you here, you now have a strange but useful material fact.

Application fit also shows up in the lubricant aisle. DuPont Teflon silicone lubricant aerosol is built for situations where you need a thin, uniform coating and don't want to over-apply. Raw dimethyl silicone oil is better when you need bulk quantity for a process application and have the equipment to apply it correctly. One is not automatically better than the other.

Seeing our Q1 and Q2 maintenance orders side by side made me realize something: we were treating all silicone-based lubricants as one category. They are not. Once I separated “formulated PTFE spray” from “bulk dimethyl silicone,” our purchasing data became clearer and our maintenance requests made more sense.

So Which Should You Choose?

I don't have a one-size-fits-all answer. But I have a decision rule that works.

  • Choose generic or bulk materials—like commodity foam or dimethyl silicone oil—when the application is low-risk, you have the expertise to verify specs, and the supplier can still provide the basics: SDS, batch info, and clean invoicing.

Why Total Cost Beats Unit Price

This is the value-over-price view. The lowest quote is not the lowest total cost. A $30 lubricant that needs rework is more expensive than a $60 lubricant that lasts. A foam board that changes dimensions in humidity is not a bargain when you have to cut and install it twice.

Bottom line: value over price. If you're only comparing unit costs, you're missing the real comparison.

The vendor who couldn't provide proper invoicing cost us $2,400. The supplier who arrived late made me look bad to my VP. The generic grease that left equipment squeaking cost us maintenance hours. Those costs are not on the quote, but they are real.
