I'm the office administrator for a 180-person fabrication company. Start at the DuPont website, not with a reseller's product page. Search for the exact material family and open the technical datasheet before you do anything else. If the product is resold as Teflon PTFE tubing, ask the distributor to send you the manufacturer datasheet and lot traceability. A simple PTFE-like description on an online store is not enough. You need to know the actual grade, pressure rating, temperature rating, and chemical compatibility. This is even more important with PTFE because related fluoropolymers like FEP and PFA look similar on paper but perform differently in the field. If the seller cannot provide documentation, I don't place the order. That rule came from one bad invoice and one bad material lot in the same quarter (ugh, that was a rough 2023).

PTFE tubing is in a different category when your application involves aggressive chemicals, high heat, or friction you can't tolerate. Standard poly tubing can be cheaper and more flexible, but it can soften, swell, or fail when it's outside its chemical compatibility envelope. PTFE offers very low friction and broad chemical resistance, and it handles temperatures that many thermoplastics cannot. It also requires proper fitting selection. PTFE can cold-flow, so you cannot just push it onto a standard barbed fitting and hope for the best. Use the right compression fitting or ferrule for the tubing wall thickness.
I went back and forth between PTFE and a standard nylon tube for one solvent-handling line. Nylon looked fine on price and pressure rating. The chemical compatibility chart told me to stop. For example, Zytel nylon resin is a common choice for mechanical strength and oil resistance, Rynite PET resin offers stiffness and dimensional stability, and Hytrel TPC-ET is a thermoplastic elastomer used when you need repeated flex and fatigue resistance. There is no universal best resin; there is only the resin whose specs match the part.
A cheap commodity plastic may work for a static bracket in a warm office, but it will not behave the same under hot oil, vibration, or UV exposure. It took me about three years of ordering parts to understand that I should not be choosing resin grades by adjectives. Choose by real numbers from datasheets. When someone writes needs to be durable, I read that as needs a clear spec before anyone commits. The supplier who documents material data earns the order. The supplier who says it's tough, trust me, gets no PO from me.

It costs more and it's heavier, but it holds up better when workers drag it across concrete, wrap it around equipment, or use it on a cold loading dock. PVC air hose is cheaper and lighter, which makes it fine for light-duty work in a climate-controlled bench area. It is not the hose I want when a cracked line could turn a repair job into a safety issue.
The moment that changed my mind was seeing the two hoses side by side after one winter. The rubber hose was still flexible. The PVC hose had hard spots, kinks, and cracks near the fittings. The word direct matters less than traceability. For something like Teflon PTFE tubing, I want to know who manufactured the resin, who converted it, and what the physical properties are. For a PTFE coating, I want the SDS and application instructions. If a seller will not share that data, I walk.
Is expedited shipping worth the extra cost?
I support paying for certainty when the cost of delay is higher than the shipping charge. In March 2024, we paid $160 to overnight a replacement PTFE tube fitting and two feet of Teflon PTFE tubing to avoid delaying a weekend shutdown. Standard delivery would have meant stopping production on Monday morning, and that day was worth more than $8,000 in output. The rush fee looked trivial from that angle. I do not pay rush fees for every order. If I'm ordering a standard spare part weeks before I need it, ground shipping is fine.
