The same logic applies to gaskets, seals, and hoses. A generic silicone adhesive sold as "silicone mix" isn't pretending to be a rubber conditioner; it's just not the right tool for that job. The supplier who tells you exactly what a product is for—and what it's not for—is the one who ends up saving you money.

What the numbers taught me (and what I'd tell a younger buyer)

Transparent pricing and transparent specs beat both "buy the brand" and "buy the cheapest." The Dupont products won on TCO for critical applications because they did what their labels claimed, consistently. The generic products won where failure wasn't expensive. Gates won on high-pressure lines. No-name won on return lines. None of those conclusions requires brand loyalty.

Rules I now operate by:

  • Ask "what's NOT included" before "what's the price"—for product specs and vendor quotes alike.
  • If a label says "silicone mix" without a stated standard or intended application, assume it's not the right tool for anything specific.

"Always buy OEM" and "always buy generic" are both lazy answers. The honest answer: it depends on the consequence of failure. The suppliers who are upfront about their product's limits—whether they sell Dupont, Gates, or no-name brands—are worth the money.
