That call I thought was routine
It was early March 2023. A new client—small shop, maybe 20 people—called about a hot oil line for a piece of packaging equipment they were refurbishing. The buyer said: “We need dupont tubing for high-temp oil. Can you source it?”
I said yes before I asked the obvious question. That was my mistake.
Look, I’ve been handling industrial material orders for about 7 years. I’ve made enough errors to fill a small binder. But this one—this was stupid. And it cost us the job.
The order looked clean on paper
The spec sheet they sent said: “dupont tubing, 1/2 inch ID, high-temp oil service, 250°F max.”
I skimmed it. My brain went: ok, PTFE. Dupont makes PTFE tubing. Everyone knows that. 250°F is easy for PTFE. I quoted $3.20/ft, 1,000 feet, 2-week lead. They approved it same day.
What I didn’t do: ask what the oil was. Or what the pressure was. Or whether they had a preferred durometer.
I want to say I was busy, but the truth is I got lazy. I figured “dupont tubing” = PTFE tubing. Standard. Done.
The call that killed it
Three weeks later the buyer calls. Not happy.
“The tubing you sent—it’s cracked. It’s swelling. We had oil all over the floor. This isn’t what we ordered.”
I checked the batch. PTFE spool, correct size. But I’d shipped standard PTFE—good for chemical resistance and temps up to 500°F—but not for this application. The oil was a mineral-based hydraulic fluid with additives that attacked the PTFE matrix at 200°F+. It didn’t melt; it swelled and delaminated.
From the outside, it looks like PTFE is PTFE. The reality is: PTFE formulations vary dramatically. Filled vs. virgin. Sintered vs. extruded. Additives for wear, for friction, for chemical resistance. I shipped a general-purpose grade. They needed a modified PTFE with a specific filler package.
The mistake affected 800 feet of material. $2,560 in product, $450 in shipping, plus a 1-week production delay for the client. They had to pay a premium for rush delivery of the correct material from another vendor. We refunded the order, but we lost the relationship.
What I should have asked
The question everyone asks is: “What material do you need?” The question they should ask is: “What is the exact operating environment?”
Here’s the thing: specifying “dupont” isn’t enough. Dupont makes hundreds of materials. “Dupont” on a tubing order could mean:
- PTFE (Teflon™) — broad chemical resistance, high temp, but not all oils
- Viton™ (FKM) — better for certain oils and fuels
- Hytrel™ (TPC-ET) — flexible, but lower temp
- Neoprene — not dupont anymore, but still referenced
Most buyers focus on the brand name and completely miss the specific formulation. The brand is a starting point, not a specification.
People assume the lowest quote for “dupont” tubing is the best deal. What they don’t see is whether the specific PTFE grade matches their application. Our price was low because we stocked a general-purpose grade. The proper grade cost 40% more and had a 3-week lead.
The foam board lesson came later
That same month, another client asked for “foil-faced foam board” for a cold storage build. They said “dupont”—I assumed they meant a specific polyisocyanurate board. They didn’t. They were worried about is polyurethane foam toxic in enclosed spaces.
I learned then to ask: “Are you concerned about off-gassing? Fire rating? Moisture?”
The client wanted foil-faced polyiso with a Class A fire rating. I quoted a standard foil-faced board that was fine for vapor barrier but had a Class C rating. Not a disaster—but not correct either. They went with a local supplier who understood their specific need.
From the outside, foil-faced foam board looks like a commodity. The reality is that foam type (polyiso vs. XPS vs. EPS), facing material, and fire rating are not interchangeable.
What I do differently now
It took me 3 years and about 15 material-related mistakes to understand that vendor relationships matter more than vendor capabilities. But more than that: asking the right questions matters more than knowing the right answers.
Now I have a pre-check list for every material inquiry:
- What is the exact operating temperature (max and sustained)?
- What fluid/gas is in contact? (Get the data sheet. Don’t guess.)
- What pressure? (Static, dynamic, peak?)
- What standard or spec must it meet? (ASTM, UL, NSF?)
- What is the actual installation environment? (Indoor, outdoor, enclosed?)
When a buyer says “dupont,” I now ask: “Which dupont material? What’s the application?” If they say “I need PTFE,” I ask: “What grade? What filler? What’s the fluid?”
That $3,200 order was a cheap lesson in the grand scheme. I know guys who’ve lost six-figure contracts over material mismatches. But it was expensive enough to stick.
If you’re sourcing industrial materials—especially if you’re a smaller shop or buying in trial quantities—please don’t make my mistake. Specify the application, not just the brand. And double-check the material data sheet against your actual operating conditions.
Because “it’s from dupont” doesn’t mean “it’ll work for your job.”
