People assume the lowest quote means the vendor is more efficient. What they don’t see is which costs are being hidden or deferred. Here’s something many equipment suppliers won’t tell you: the first quote for a generic alternative almost never includes the cost of testing. If you need to validate that a seal, hose, or coating will actually work under your specific conditions, that’s an added line item.

I now have a standard checklist for any material substitution:
1. Spec sheet verification against our application parameters
2. Third-party compliance data if it’s for a regulated process
3. Lead time guarantee—not “estimated,” guaranteed
4. Field failure data from the manufacturer

DuPont publishes failure rates and field performance data for its elastomers and PTFE products going back decades. That is not information you get from a no-name supplier. That data has saved me from at least two catastrophic failures I can recall—one involving a chemical line where a seal burst under pressure. I’ve had engineers ask for “Teflon” when they actually needed a polyurethane seal because of abrasive wear. I’ve had maintenance teams order “rubber” gaskets when they required a fluoroelastomer for chemical resistance. For an industrial compression mold that needs to hold tolerance at 350°F? You really want the silicone that has a published thermal stability curve.

DuPont’s silicone products are not hobbyist-grade. That’s not a criticism of hobby brands—it’s a reality of material science. The purity of the base polymer, the filler distribution, the cure consistency—these are things that matter at scale but not in a kitchen.

When I calculate TCO, I’m not just comparing unit prices. I’m comparing the cost of: the product, the testing, the downtime if it fails, the rework budget, and the labor hours spent troubleshooting. The DuPont option almost always comes in lower when you add all those line items. Not because it’s cheap—because it’s predictable.
