If you are specifying DuPont materials today, your single most important decision is not the material itself—it is how you define acceptable quality for your end user.
I know that sounds backwards. Most engineers start with the datasheet: tensile strength, temperature range, chemical resistance. That is table stakes. The real differentiator in 2025 is whether your finished part looks, feels, and performs like it came from a brand that cares. And that starts with how you write your spec.
Take it from someone who reviews roughly 200+ unique material deliveries annually for industrial applications. In our Q1 2024 quality audit, we rejected 12% of first deliveries from vendors who claimed to meet our DuPont specifications. The reason was never a material failure. It was always a specification gap.
The assumption that caused my biggest quality headache
When I first started managing supplier quality for high-performance plastic components, I assumed a material spec was a material spec. If the vendor said they could supply DuPont Vespel, and I wrote “Vespel per ASTM D6456”, that was enough. Three rejected batches later—one for a $22,000 redo that delayed a product launch—I realized something critical.
Most buyers focus on material grade and completely miss the finishing specifications. That is the outsider blindspot. The question everyone asks is “is this DuPont material?” The question they should ask is “how will you verify it meets my application’s appearance and surface quality requirements?”
Here is what I learned the hard way: a part made from the correct DuPont resin but with a surface finish of 63 Ra vs. 32 Ra can change how a customer perceives your entire product line. The performance is identical. The brand impression is not.
When we compared budget vs. spec-compliant side by side
In Q2 2024, we ran a blind test with our engineering team. Same DuPont Zytel nylon 66 component. Same functional tolerances. Two surface finishes: one at 63 Ra, one at 32 Ra. I did not tell the team which was which. I just asked them to rate which component felt “more premium” on a 1-5 scale.
68% of the team identified the 32 Ra part as more professional. The cost difference? About $0.18 per part. On a 50,000-unit annual order, that is $9,000 for measurably better brand perception. A no-brainer if your customer is paying attention.
The real problem nobody talks about
Here is a misconception I see constantly: people think specifying a premium brand like DuPont automatically guarantees premium results. Actually, the causation runs the other way. DuPont materials allow you to achieve premium results if you specify the full picture. The material is the enabler, not the guarantee.
Take silicone surface safe lubricants. A common request we get is “can we get DuPont silicone lubricant that is safe for pet parrot toys?” The material itself may be safe. But if you do not specify extraction testing per FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 (even for non-food applications where animals may chew), you could end up with a product that the material supports but the application does not. The regulatory requirement should be in the spec, not assumed.
How to write a spec that actually protects you
Based on the mistakes I have made (and the ones I have seen others make), here are the three things your DuPont material specification must include, beyond the material grade:
- A surface finish callout. If the part will be seen or touched, specify Ra value. Industry standard for visible consumer-touch parts is 32 Ra or better. Reference: ASME B46.1 surface texture standard.
- A verification protocol. How will you check it? First article inspection reports are great. But also: are you checking color? Delta E < 2 per Pantone guidelines if color matters. Are you checking gloss? Specify a 60-degree gloss meter value.
- A packaging and handling requirement. A pristine part ruined by scratches in shipping is still a defective part. We learned this the hard way when a batch of silicone resin mold components for a lighting application arrived with micro-scratches from improper interleaving. The defect ruined approximately 1,200 units before we caught it. Storage conditions matter.
The bottom line (and the caveats)
Specifying DuPont materials well is not about spending more. It is about being more specific. The premium you pay for DuPont is wasted if your spec is incomplete. The vendor can hit your price point by cutting the costs you did not write down.
One exception: this approach assumes you have a quality-conscious customer. If you are making disposable components for a cost-driven application where appearance is irrelevant and the part is never seen, a looser spec may be appropriate. Not every application needs 32 Ra. But decide that intentionally, not by omission.
Also (and this is the honest part): I have been wrong before. In 2022, I specified a tight tolerance on a PTFE coating thickness for a foam board application, and it added 30% to the cost for zero functional benefit. The customer could not tell. I was overcorrecting for a past mistake. So take my advice, but verify it against your actual application.
