I manage purchasing for a 340-person industrial services company. Teflon is the brand name that made PTFE famous; PTFE is the underlying polymer—polytetrafluoroethylene. A coating spray uses PTFE particles in a carrier that evaporates, leaving a dry, low-friction layer.

I use this for drawer slides, conveyor guides, hinges, and small mechanisms where a wet oil would just collect dust and turn into a paste. The dry film is a maintenance time-saver. Here's the thing: a wet lubricant might feel cheaper at the register, but the labor to clean off the residue makes it worse overall. That's the total cost of ownership idea: the price tag is just the first line.

The numbers once said buy a generic multi-purpose spray. It was half the price and had “lubricant” written all over it. Scenario 2: You Need an O-Ring Lubricant

O-rings are one of those parts that seem too simple to be a problem—until they're not. If you're installing a new Viton O-ring and you grab the first grease available, you might be creating a leak before the system even starts. The lubricant has to be compatible with the elastomer.

My default o-ring lubricant is a PTFE-based product. Why? Because PTFE is inert in most chemical environments. It's less likely to react with the majority of O-ring compounds, whether they're nitrile, EPDM, or Viton. That makes it a safe first choice for general maintenance. But I still check the technical datasheet for the specific o-ring material before buying in bulk. That's the TCO way of thinking: a $15 tube is cheap compared with the labor, downtime, and possible safety cost of a failed seal.

Real talk: you don't need the most expensive lubricant, but you do need the right one. I had a situation where a budget grease was physically easy to apply but caused a nitrile O-ring to swell. The maintenance lead caught it before the system was reassembled. The replacement O-rings cost $40 total—but the two hours of labor and the near-miss with a chemical line would have been far more expensive.

Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), claims like “safe for all o-rings” have to be substantiated. I've learned to read the label and the product data sheet rather than trust a marketing line. If a supplier can't show compatibility documentation, I assume it doesn't exist.

Scenario 3: Can You Screw Into Foam Board?

This one gets asked a lot, and the honest answer is “yes, but...” It depends on the kind of foam board you're using.

PVC foam sheet (signage board)

This is the dense, smooth foam board often used for indoor signs and displays. You can absolutely screw into it. Drill a pilot hole first, then use a sharp sheet-metal screw, not a drywall screw. The pilot hole should be slightly smaller than the screw's outer diameter. A blunt screw will split or strip the hole, and then you're left with a repair instead of a mount.

Insulation foam (XPS or EPS)

This is the soft, sometimes beaded foam board used in construction. A regular screw won't hold much weight because the foam crushes. If you have to fasten something to it, use a large fender washer or embed a wood block behind the foam. For things like house numbers or small signs, construction adhesive often works better than a screw—less risk of a tear-out.

Paper-faced foam core display board

The lightweight stuff you see in craft stores. You can screw into it if you use a plastic anchor, but for a vertical load, adhesive is usually the smarter play. The paper face will tear long before the screw does.

The counterintuitive part: drilling a pilot hole is not optional for a clean result. I've learned that from the school of “let me just try it without drilling.” It works once, then the next time the screw goes in crooked and the panel cracks. Replacing an $80 PVC foam panel because you skipped a 30-second step is a bad trade. That's the total cost conversation again.

How to Figure Out Which Scenario You're In

If you're not sure which product to order, start by asking what a failure costs. If the coating dries up, do the parts just get noisy? If the O-ring leaks, is it a $5 drip or a chemical safety issue? If the sign falls, does it just embarrass you or could it hurt someone?

For general facility maintenance, I keep three things in stock:

  • A can of DuPont Teflon coating spray for dry lubrication and release applications.
  • A PTFE-based o-ring lubricant for assembling and maintaining seals.
  • A small assortment of stainless pan-head screws and pilot drills for foam board projects.
