I manage purchasing for a 200-person industrial parts manufacturer—roughly $1.5M in annual MRO spend across 60–80 vendors. A big chunk of that goes to DuPont materials and PTFE-based products, which means I field a lot of questions from our engineering and maintenance teams. A few come up so often I've turned them into this FAQ.
This is what I've learned from actually ordering this stuff—not from a datasheet.
DuPont Teflon coating spray vs. DuPont PTFE coating: which one do I actually need?
The short version: spray is for maintenance and small fixes. A real PTFE coating is for parts that need to perform under load.
DuPont Teflon coating spray is the aerosol you'll see in toolboxes. It works for lubricating hinges, keeping saw blades from gumming up, coating threads—quick stuff. A 400ml can runs about $14–18 as of Q4 2024. Verify current pricing before you budget, because it's been all over the place.
A DuPont PTFE coating, on the other hand, is a multi-layer system applied to a prepared surface by a licensed applicator and cured at high temperature. We use it on rollers and conveyor components that run 14–16 hours a day—well, 14 to 16, depending on the shift pattern. The industrial coating costs 4–6x more upfront, but it lasts for years instead of weeks. When I ran the TCO comparison in 2023, the spray approach was costing us roughly 3x more per year once we factored in downtime and repeat application labor.
Honestly, I'm not sure why anyone tries to substitute spray for an industrial coating. My best guess is the price per can looks harmless, and nobody adds up the reapplication cost until later.
What should I check before ordering wholesale hydraulic hose?
I've never fully understood the pricing logic for hydraulic hose. The spread between budget and premium brands can hit 70%, and I suspect it's more art than science.
But unit price is the last thing I look at. When I took over purchasing in 2020, we were buying a budget hose at $4.50/ft that failed every 8 months on the same machine. In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, we switched to a PTFE-lined hose at $6.75/ft. It doesn't fail. The 50% higher unit cost is irrelevant compared to labor, downtime, and fluid leaks. (Both price points are from our 2024 project—verify current rates before budgeting.) Schedule reliability is the real differentiator. Put another way: a cheap hose delivered late costs more than an expensive hose delivered on time.
Before any bulk hose order, I verify:
- Pressure rating—working pressure, not burst. SAE J517 is the standard I reference for construction types.
- Fluid compatibility—for aggressive chemicals, PTFE-lined hose is the right call. DuPont makes PTFE resins used for exactly this.
- Fittings and crimping—does the quote include fittings? We once compared a "cheap" hose that needed special adapters—the total landed cost was higher than the premium option with standard fittings.
- Lead time consistency—a supplier that misses ship dates by a week is expensive, no matter how good the per-foot price looks.
Can mold grow on plastic?
Yes. This one comes up a lot, probably because "plastic" feels synthetic enough that people assume it's immune. It isn't. Mold isn't eating the plastic itself in most cases—it's feeding on the dust, skin flakes, and organic film sitting on the surface. Put a plastic bin in a humid warehouse and give it a few weeks. You'll see.
According to the EPA's mold guidance page (epa.gov/mold), mold can grow on almost any surface when moisture and organic matter are present. Porous or textured plastics trap more debris, which makes the problem worse. Some plasticizers can even be broken down by certain fungi over time.
I know this from personal experience too. Last summer, a corner of our storage area hit around 75% humidity for a few weeks straight. I assumed the plastic bins were safe—"it's plastic, mold can't grow on it," I told myself. That was the one time it mattered. Black spots showed up on the bins and on the cardboard product packaging inside them.
This is one reason PTFE-coated surfaces are so common in food processing and medical environments. A PTFE coating is hydrophobic and low-friction, so organic film doesn't cling as easily. No film, no fungal buffet. At least, that's been our experience in the plant—if someone has controlled data on long-term mold resistance of PTFE vs. bare plastic, I'd genuinely like to see it.
Why do pet tarantula keepers care about PTFE?
This is my favorite unexpected question. A coworker's son keeps tarantulas, and they asked if our PTFE thread tape could stop an escape. It turns out tarantulas can climb smooth glass and plastic using microscopic hairs on their feet. But they can't grip PTFE—it's too slippery.
A strip of PTFE tape around the inside rim of an enclosure is a well-known trick in the tarantula hobby. It uses the exact same non-stick property we rely on for industrial release coatings and anti-stick surfaces. Same material, completely different scale.
I don't know who first figured that one out, but it's a perfect example of why PTFE shows up in so many places you wouldn't expect. If you ever need to explain PTFE's low friction to a non-engineer, this is the story that lands.
How do I verify I'm buying genuine DuPont materials?
Counterfeit and relabeled material is the hidden cost nobody budgets for. In 2021, a supplier sold us what they described as "equivalent to" DuPont PTFE at a 40% discount. I knew I should check the certificate of conformance before accepting delivery, but thought "what are the odds?" The odds caught up with me. The lot failed QC, and the rework cost us $2,400.
Now I do three checks:
- Authorized distributor status. DuPont publishes a distributor list on their site. If a reseller isn't there, I won't buy branded DuPont material from them.
- Lot numbers and certificates. Real DuPont products carry traceable lot numbers. I ask for a certificate of analysis or conformance before payment.
- Price sanity. If a quote is 20–30% below the usual market range, that's a red flag. DuPont materials carry a premium because the performance data is backed by the manufacturer. A deal too good to be true usually is.
That last rule has saved me more than once. The cheapest quote without documentation becomes the most expensive purchase by the end of the year.
