Most polyurethane foam used in insulation and seating is thermoset, so it cannot simply be melted into a new foam product the way a PET bottle becomes another bottle. Flexible polyurethane foam is commonly ground and rebonded into carpet cushion. Rigid foam can be processed through granulation or chemical recovery programs in specialized facilities. Whether any of that happens depends on the region, the recycler, and the exact form of foam you are buying.
If the stock code only says foam board, I now ask about classification and disposal before supplier selection. A material that saves a dollar per sheet but creates a special waste stream can lose the cost advantage in one haul. That is why total cost has to include the end of the product's life, not just the moment it arrives at the loading dock.
We Don't Have Time for Specifications Is an Expensive Argument
